THY MERCIES ARE GREAT
Psalm 57:10 emphasizes that God’s mercy is not limited or fragile but immense, far-reaching, and constant, extending beyond human understanding.
Steve and I had a discussion last week about the rainbow. Have you ever been in an airplane and seen the reflection of the airplane around the airplane? It is a full circle rainbow encompassing the entire plane. What a rare and glorious site. Do you know what this is called? It is called, “glory”. What a magnificent name for this.
From earth, humans usually see the rainbow as a partial arc, beautiful yet incomplete. It is shaped by our limited angle and position beneath the sky. From higher above, such as in an airplane, that same light and water can form a circular display. This display reveals more of what was hidden from the ground and hints at a fuller design that awaits us. Scripture suggests that heaven offers an even greater perspective. From heaven it is no longer bound by physics or position. The rainbow is seen in its completeness, encircling God’s throne as an eternal sign of His covenant. What appears fragmented and momentary to us on earth is, from heaven’s view, whole, unbroken, and fully revealed.
The earth rainbow is only seen when certain conditions are met. The eternal rainbow that encircles the throne is eternal. It is a total promise that God will never destroy the earth by flood again. Visible continually as the conditions around the throne are unchanging and eternal.
This is a beautiful picture God gave to us. It is a reminder, by spotting the glory from the airplane, that more glorious things are yet to come.
Our perspective is lifted through faith. With spiritual growth, we begin to see more of how His mercy surrounds us. His mercy not just appearing in isolated moments but woven through our lives. In heaven, God’s mercy will be fully revealed. It will no longer be glimpsed in fragments. It will be seen as all-encompassing and eternal. As the rainbow fully encircling His throne symbolizes mercy that never ends. It never fades and He never breaks His covenant promises.
PSALM 57:10
For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds,
